Most people will generally leap at the idea of making money without leaving the comfort of their homes; surprisingly, however, many immediately recoil when confronted with terms such as “AdSense™” and “Affiliates”. They are not aware of the massive monetary potential that lies within a few clicks of a mouse, made available by the spread of the Web. To the people who exploit this potential properly, though, there are potential earnings on par with normal everyday work available, with some even living solely off their online profit.

Possibly the newest trend to have emerged in the online money-making game is that of blogging. With the advent of free services like Blogger, Blog.com and Wordpress, many people have their own blogs. The difference between blogs designed to make money and those that aren’t is partially the fact that many blogs simply detail the lives of their bloggers (i.e. “Woke up today, fed Bubbles.”). Cute as it may seem to these would-be authors, the fact is that the majority of people (excluding those who follow the Perez Hilton-type blogger) just aren’t interested in these online diaries, but will more likely be drawn towards a particular subject of interest. Consequently it is those who appeal to a niche market, such as gardening or computer games, that tend to make more money. The advertising mechanism (such as Google AdSense™) is based on a pay-per-click foundation; every time someone clicks on an ad that is on the host’s blog, an amount of money is sent to the host’s Adsense account. Typically, such sums are minute by themselves (made even more so by the fact that the probability of having an ad clicked on a host’s blog is around 2%) but can accumulate over time to become sizeable sources of income. Another mistake that many bloggers make is not updating their blogs frequently. In doing so, they are jeopardising their chances of preserving their market’s interest (having captured it with the first set of posts) and consequently increasing the chances of people clicking on the advertisements. To avoid these pitfalls, a blogger must be unrelenting at constantly updating his/her blog and not fail to keep their posts interesting.

Freelance writing also brings a rather decent side flow of income, provided that the writing is of a adequate calibre. Websites such as Helium.com™ and AssociatedContent.com™ pay for articles that generate many views, and as they often allocate writing prompts, chances are that a writer of decent ability can obtain a decent amount of money. A snowball effect can then be established, whereby the writer’s calibre precedes them (through 5 star rating systems) and increasing numbers of readers flock to his/her articles, thus generating even more cash.

If, however, there are individuals who, for whatever reason cannot write, sweepstakes and free stuff sites do also provide chances for one-off payments that can be quite substantial. Recently, paid surveys have returned to fashion and have been shown to work, although there are numerous fake websites that scam naive users. The truth is that corporations pay billions of dollars to ascertain what their market wants, and a part of this is research (i.e. surveys and questionnaires). By partaking in surveys, users are in effect agreeing these companies to sample the population through them and therefore cater their services towards the particular market. Generally, legitimate paid surveys will offer between $3 to $20 for simple questionnaires, whereas more detailed, personal or sometimes even telephone surveys will pay more. Generally, a participation cheque from the marketing company will appear around 2 months after the user’s participation in the survey, but users should beware of fake sites, as for every legitimate paid survey there are a dozen illegitimate ones who will bombard users with constant advertising and have access to their personal details. Paid surveys will never be enough to sustain a person by themselves, but they do provide a side income. There are several that you can take advantage of that can be found on this free stuff site
